During my Service Design course at EKA, I had the opportunity to collaborate with the Tallinn City Municipality to explore potential uses of Tallinn’s digital twin technology. Our primary focus was to investigate how this innovative tool could help protect the city’s heritage.
Team & Roles: We were team of three, where I contributed to research and prototype design, with guidance from two mentors Dan Mikkin & Sofía Vega Anza.
Date: November 2024
Project Objective: Our goal was to explore potential innovative solutions for protecting and managing the city's heritage sites through the potential of Tallinn's digital twin. The research pahse was more team work and towards the end of the process we split up and came up with our own solutions.
The processs: Reserch, Ideation, Protyping

Research (Discover)
We began with extensive desk research on digital twin technologies, focusing on industry trends, existing solutions, and future development projects. We also performed a stakeholder analysis, grouping them into relevant categories, and conducted market and competitor analyses to understand the landscape better.

Following this, we carried out targeted interviews with various stakeholders, including residents of Tallinn and government officials, to gain an in-depth understanding of their perspectives on heritage protection. We did synthesis and breakdown of the interviews to find meaningful insights from the interview data.

Define
After weeks of intensive research, we synthesized our findings and delivered a debrief to the client. The next step was to create user personas and user journeys, where we identified pain points and key values for the target users.

Develop
During the development phase, we quickly shifted to wireframing and prototyping, brainstorming possible solutions based on our research. We tested these solutions with a few users, gathered their feedback, and made necessary tweaks. Finally, we presented our prototypes to the Tallinn Strategic Management Office.
Reflection
This was one of my first large-scale design projects, and it was an incredible learning experience. Our mentors did a fantastic job guiding us through the process. At the start, we felt overwhelmed due to the project's scale and the broad scope we had to cover, but by breaking down the task into smaller, manageable steps (following the Double Diamond approach), we were able to stay on track. Each stage of the process presented unique challenges, but with the support of my team and mentors, I was able to contribute effectively and provide a strong solution.
